In "Before I Fall" there are many characters that play many different roles and portray various archetypes throughout the novel.
A hero is the protagonist and continues a journey from childhood to being an adult. Sam could be classified as the hero in this novel. During her childhood she was bullied and not so popular but growing up and changing she becomes on of the most popular teenagers in her school. Then she realizes how badly she had been treating everyone and changes and goes on a journey to change herself and the way she treats people and then she sets off to help save Juliet's life and tries to convince her to not commit suicide.
Death- Juliet dies. Although Sam was never close friends with Juliet and was always mean to her she feel uber bad because she could have been an impact into why Juliet killed herself. It also makes Elody, Lindsay and Ally change their way of acting towards other people.
The Wise Old man- would be Sam's mom throughout the novel she is always giving good and wise advice to Sam and her friends. When Juliet commits suicide she is the first one to comfort Sam and make her feel a lot better about what has happened. She is also always there for Samantha in good times and bad.

Dreams
One of the themes I have discovered about this books is dreams. In Before I Fall, Sam dies over and over again. Starts off every cupid day waking up then after school she goes to Ally's to get ready with Lindsay and Elody then ends up going to Kent's party. The first night she attends it with her friends and towards the end of the night they make fun of Juliet, they refer to her as the psycho and then they drive off in Lindsay's car and die in a terrible car accident. Then the next morning she wakes up and it's cupid day again.
The next night she goes to Kent's party and again Juliet calls them names, but instead of Sam throwing her drink in her face all she says is "You don't know me." But just like the night before they die in a car accident. But once again she wakes up and it's cupid day again. Sam goes to math class and flirts with Mr. Daimler, then after class they fool around. Sam asks Lindsay why she hates Juliet so much and Elody and Ally make fun of Sam for caring about Juliet, the psycho. They leave the party early and all go back to Ally's. Around two in the morning the phone rings and Juliet has committed suicide, blowing her head of in her room. Sam goes up to the bathroom and instead she finds herself looking through yearbooks and finds pictures of Lindsay and Juliet together, they were best friends in public school, but she doesn't question Lindsay about it. Another cupid day goes by and the same party Sam went to the past 4 nights occurs again but this time Sam tries to find Juliet to stop her from what she thinks she's about to do. Sam finds Juliet out at the road this time and she jumps out into the oncoming traffic and a car kills her.
Sam has the same day everyday and she relives it and changes what she thinks causes her death so that she won't die. She also tries to help Juliet and realizes how bad of a person she has been to peers in high school, like Juliet and Kent. She realizes she has been a huge bully.

A Breif Introduction to Before I Fall
Sam gets picked up by her best friends everyday at 6:55am. Ally and Elody arrive in Lindsay's Ranger Rover with sesame seed bagels that they previously purchase before arriving to Sam's house from Dunkin Donuts. Before taking off with her friends, Sam is awaken every morning by her little sister Izzy. Sam can not stand her. Sam pleads that she is annoying and hates when she comes into her room full of energy and loud. It's cupid day, February 12th, and cupid day celebrates Valentine's day. You can buy a roses for your friends for one dollar and attached to a rose will be a note that you can write whatever you want on it. The person who gets the most roses is said to be the most popular and hottest person in the school. So as you can most likely guess it is many people's goals to get the most roses. They all know Lindsay will will, she's the prettiest and most out going of anyone they know. Lindsay, Sam, Elody and Ally all wear identical outfits to school on special occasions and for cupid day they wear black mini skirts and red fur trimmed tank tops. Sam gets a lot of roses but the only one she cares about is the one from her boyfriend, Rob. Although when she gets the rose from him is says "Happy cupid day, luv ya. happy now?" This makes Sam very disappointed when he says 'luv ya' she was expecting 'Love you' as she thinks they are totally different things.
Mr. Daimler is Sam's math teacher, who she has had the hots for for many years. He is six feet tall and always tan and dresses modernly. He is considered the hottest guy at Jefferson High, he always sends Sam a rose. Sam also gets a rose from Kent her public school crush with a cartoon written on the note. Sam is too cool to talk to Kent for every time he attempts to talk to her she completely ignores him and walks away.
Sam and Lindsay skip English class and head to TYCB a Chinese restaurant. They spot Alex and Anna, Alex is cheating on his girlfriend with Anna and Sam and Lindsay just witnessed it! Lindsay talks to them about the party tonight at Kent's and then brings up Alex's girlfriend Bridget asking if he is going to be bringing her. Em brassing them until their heads are ready to pop off Sam and Lindsay leave.
Before the party they all go to Ally's to drink and do make-up and hair together. This is the night Sam plans to lose her virginity. Then they head to Kent's and Rob is wasted, Sam is supper disappointed and didn't want either of them to be like that for their first time. After being at the party for a while everyone goes silent as Juliet Sykes walks into the room she starts yelling profane words out at Lindsay, Elody, Ally and Sam. Then they yell back at her psycho and dumping beer out onto her. Kent sees Sam after and can not believe what she was done they argue and once again Sam completely ignores him and walks away to find Rob, where he is passed out on a couch with drool coming out of his mouth. At 12:39 they are driving down the road skidding on the slippery wet pavement and all of a sudden Lindsay yells and her cigarette lights on fire and they all die.
