The Lovely Bones was written by Alice Sebold. It's the story of a teenage girl named Susie Salmon, who is lured into a trap by Mr. Harvey her next door neighbor, who in secrecy has been spying and stalking her since he moved into the house just next door. Mr. Harvey rapes and murders Susie, cutting her body into pieces throwing them into a safe and throwing the safe into a deep dark black sinkhole, where most people from the community throw their trash. Then Susie's spirit goes into heaven as she watches from above, her family struggle with her loss and find all the clues to who killed her.
The Salmon family refuses to accept Susie's death, until another neighbor's dog finds her elbow. Susie's father immediately has a suspicious feeling towards Mr. Harvey from this day on. Eventually her father, Jack, convinces Lindsay, Susie's younger sister, to believe that Mr. Harvey killed her sister.
Susie's mother has an affair with Len Fenerman, a widow and a detective in Susie's case. Jack and Abigail (Susie's mother) grow farther and farther apart as Jack will not give up until he finds out who killed his daughter. Abigail even moves away to get away from everything in hopes to forget about her lost daughter and move on.
Meanwhile back at home Lindsay goes over to Mr. Harvey's house while he's away and finds a picture of the underground den that he lured Susie into years ago. The police still do not arrest Harvey and he flees knowing he is guilty and goes to Norristown.
Years after Susie's death they do conclude that it was in fact Mr. Harvey as well as several other young girls years and years ago. Susie meets some of Mr. Harvey's other victims in her heaven and see into Mr. Harvey's terrible childhood and how he attempted to stop killing years ago but he is addicted.
Mr.Harvey tries to strike again after stalking a young girl in New Hampshire and an icicle breaks off of a roof and falls onto his head causing him to fall down into a snow covered slope, killing him.
