My Conclusions

In my conclusions both books were great reads and had much in common. Both had to do with death, discovery and the bringing together of families. Although they were not totally similar there are many minor details that make them related. In both novels there were parts i enjoyed and parts i didn't enjoy. For me I'm the kind of person who has a hard time reading a book if i don't find interest in them but i didn't have that problem with either of these books.
I would recommend them to anyone who likes mystery or self discovery books.
The lovely bones was also turned into a movie, and after reading the book, i watched the movie and it was a very disappointing movie, they didn't include some of the main parts like when the mother has an affair and then later moves away. So if someone said they were going to read the book i would tell them to watch the movie first and then read the novel or just not watch the movie at all!
But i would recommend either book to anyone and i really enjoyed reading them!

Feminist Critique

I believe a feminist critic would and would not approve of this novel. I think this because first of all Susie plays a week helpless girl who is raped then murdered, she barely tries to fight back and as a reader i thought she was fairly stupid to go in a dirt hole with a stranger in the dark. A feminist critique would probably agree with me when i say how stupid it was of Susie. Susie also is portrayed as weak because although Mr. Harvey took her life away and did the unimaginable to her, when she sees what his past was like in heaven she feels bad for him!
Another reason why they might not like this film is because Abigail, the mother, has an affair with another man, and is unfaithful to her husband and her children. She is also selfish because she leaves her two living children behind and moves away. I feel bad because if i had kids i couldn't imagine one dying but i also would never leave my living children. Abigail also doesn't want to search for her daughters murderer.
A feminist critic might also like this novel because Lindsay is very brave and goes into Mr.Harvey's house and tries to find clues to solve the murder. She also keeps her family together when her mom leaves she helps raise her younger brother and takes care of her father from day to day making sure he's healthy and eating right. She also helps her grandma clean and cook and helps take on what her mother used to do before she left, just to help keep the family alive.

Reader Response

In the Lovely bones the part of the novel that engaged me was when Susie stupidly goes into the ground 'playground' with her neighbor Mr. Harvey who she had never once talked to and he was a complete stranger. i know that if someone strange man or woman ever asked me to go in a deep dark dirt hole with them i would be quite suspicious. Ever since that part in the book i presumed something bad was going to happen to Susie and the book would be about her discovery. Another part of the book that engaged me was when Lindsay breaks into Harvey's house and searches his house for clues in the murder of her sister, it was the most suspenseful part of the novel and i couldn't put the book down until that section was done and to find out that Lindsay got out of the house safely. I also didn't expect Mr. Harvey to come home early and find her there, it lead to a wild goose chase and made me as the reader very scared for Lindsay as to what might happen to her if he caught her in there. Although Lindsay did not find as much as she wanted to it still proves how determined she was to prove that Mr. Harvey was the one who killed Susie.

The part of the novel that annoyed me was about half way through the book it seems like Susie goes on and on about her heaven but in reality all the reader wants to know about is if her family ever proves Harvey guilty. this part is really dragged on and includes things that the reader doesn't really care about and it made me not want to read that part. It just felt like it went on and on about nothing.

A part of the novel that puzzled me was when Abigail, Susie's mother has an affair with the Detective. It was a sad part because Susie saw everything and felt as though since her mother was not determined to find her killer and just wanted to forget about her, Susie felt like her mother did not love her anymore, she felt abandoned. Then Abigail gets fed up with Jack's obsession with proving Mr. Harvey guilty she moves to California and gets a job at a winery leaving her other children and going away. I can't understand how someone could just up and leave their entire life and family behind and move on. Although she does move away to forget everything she however fails and moves back home when Jack has a heart attack, i know i haven't been in this kind of situation but i couldn't imagine doing what Abigail did.

Determination

In The lovely Bones, Susie Salmon watches her family from above and narrates the novel from heaven. Susie's killer walks the street for many years being unknown to be a serial killer. George Harvey clearly has no quilt for what he has done to many girls and feels no sympathy towards the families of his victims. Although he plays his part very well in acting sympathetic and not being suspicious of anything, he eventually is discovered as being the killer of many many victims in various places.
Susie watches from above as Mr. Harvey walks the streets and no one knows what he has done. Susie becomes determined to help her family by giving them clues and signs that he infact was her murderer. Her father and sister do not give up to prove that he was the awful cold hearted man that killed young Susie. Susie is still present in their house and they can feel her still there. Her father especially can feel her still with him and knows that he will not give up until her proves Mr. Harvey guilty.
Susie not only gives feelings towards her family members but also to Ruth and Ray, they can feel her with them as well. In fact when Mr.Harvey puts her body in the sink hole Susie's spirit goes into Ruth's and Ray becomes aware of this. She points to the safe while in Ruth's body and just as Mr. Harvey goes to dump it in he senses that someones watching him and turns to see Ruth and Ray focusing in on him. He realizes that they know what was in the safe and throws it in.
When Susie's father finally proves that Mr.Harvey was guilty, with Lindsay's help, and the police find clues and link him to another young girls murder years ago, they begin the search to look for him.
Before the police catch Mr. Harvey he falls down an ice hill and dies from injuries.
Before I Fall doesn't have anything to do with the family trying to solve a murder, it has to do with Sam, trying to figure out why it was her who deserved to die. She gets to relive this day over and over again and each day she relives is different in some way. Her discovery isn't to prove someone different it's more a journey of self discovery and a realization of who she was becoming.

The White Light

In both novels the characters talk about right before they die they see a 'white light'. Many people believe that before you die you see this same white light appear. My mom was in a car crash when i was 13 and she is very lucky to still be alive. She was in very ruff shape. A car was speeding on highbury going out of London and my mom was going in, the car hit black ice swerved and t-boned my mom's car. The other driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and died instantly. My mom said she saw a white light that morning.
Susie says in the novel that before she went to heaven there was a raging white light ahead of her and Sam as the car rolls and she is slowly dying she also explains how all the can see is a white light and she can feel anything.
Some people believe this is called the tunnel of white light. Many people have seen this light that associated with a near-death experience, and your go back to many old memories from your entire life and you see them all flash by you extrememly quick.
Maybe this is just a myth about the white light and maybe it is just in peoples heads that they will see a white light and possibly just think it. I believe in the 'white light', do you?

Death

Both The Lovely Bones and Before I Fall have the protagonists dying very suddenly at the beginning of the novels.

Over 90% of novels have some kind of death in it whether or not it's a human or an animal eventually someone dies. Most deaths are murders, some are suicides and others are accidents.

In The Lovely Bones, Susie is raped then murdered by Mr. Harvey. This was a planned murder and had a lot of planning and thought put into it so he wouldn't get caught right way, even though eventually he did! Mr. Harvey had also killed several other girls. He killed Jackie Meyer and Wendy Richter who were both 14, Leah Fox who was 12, Flora Hernandez who was 8, Leida Johnson who was 6 and Sophia Cichetti who was 49. George Harvey murdered December 6th, 1973 when she was 14. Susie was on her way home from school and she took a short cut through a cornfield because it was getting late and her mother hated her being late for dinner. She met Mr. Harvey there and he brought her into his bunker he had built for the 'neighbor kids'. Down in the dirt were many toys and candles lighting up the area. Mr.Harvey started scaring Susie so as she attempted to escape he pulled her down raped her then killed her. The only evidence the police found were her school notes, her elbow and her hat.

In Before I Fall, Sam dies in a car accident due to a drunk driver and slippery roads. Then as she relives the day and doesn't die Juliet the 'phsyco' commits suicide. She is down in her basement by herself and takes a gun and puts it right through her head. There were many reasons as to why Juliet could of had to the reasoning to do this, she was bullied at school, she never talked to anyone about her problems, her family life was awful and her father was abusive and an alcoholic.

Background Information on Alice Sebold

Alice grew up in Philadelphia. She attended Syracuse University and while walking home through a park off campus she was raped. She told the police and later found out that a young girl had been murdered in the same location.

While at UCI Sebold wrote Lucky a memoir of her rape for a ten page assignment which turned into a forty page assignment! After writing Lucky she wrote The Lovely Bones. Sebold wrote about violence because she believed that is was not unusual, it's a part of life.

She has also written a book called The Almost Moon, and the first page begins with "When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily.

Alice's novels are reflections of her own life and tell people her story, some may think these stories are very harsh and inhumane to write about but it's reality and it does happen to the best of us.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

The Lovely Bones was written by Alice Sebold. It's the story of a teenage girl named Susie Salmon, who is lured into a trap by Mr. Harvey her next door neighbor, who in secrecy has been spying and stalking her since he moved into the house just next door. Mr. Harvey rapes and murders Susie, cutting her body into pieces throwing them into a safe and throwing the safe into a deep dark black sinkhole, where most people from the community throw their trash. Then Susie's spirit goes into heaven as she watches from above, her family struggle with her loss and find all the clues to who killed her.
The Salmon family refuses to accept Susie's death, until another neighbor's dog finds her elbow. Susie's father immediately has a suspicious feeling towards Mr. Harvey from this day on. Eventually her father, Jack, convinces Lindsay, Susie's younger sister, to believe that Mr. Harvey killed her sister.
Susie's mother has an affair with Len Fenerman, a widow and a detective in Susie's case. Jack and Abigail (Susie's mother) grow farther and farther apart as Jack will not give up until he finds out who killed his daughter. Abigail even moves away to get away from everything in hopes to forget about her lost daughter and move on.
Meanwhile back at home Lindsay goes over to Mr. Harvey's house while he's away and finds a picture of the underground den that he lured Susie into years ago. The police still do not arrest Harvey and he flees knowing he is guilty and goes to Norristown.
Years after Susie's death they do conclude that it was in fact Mr. Harvey as well as several other young girls years and years ago. Susie meets some of Mr. Harvey's other victims in her heaven and see into Mr. Harvey's terrible childhood and how he attempted to stop killing years ago but he is addicted.
Mr.Harvey tries to strike again after stalking a young girl in New Hampshire and an icicle breaks off of a roof and falls onto his head causing him to fall down into a snow covered slope, killing him.

My Conclusion

For my conclusion this book was a great book to read and i am so happy that i chose this book. For me to actually read a book it is very hard because if i am not interested i will make up any excuse and procrastinate big time just so that i don't have to read the book. But this book mad me want to read more and more just after the first page. I actually caught my self staying up late just to read more and more of it each night, as it only took me a total of three days to read the entire book.
Throughout the novel Sam finds out who she really is, she overcomes many obstacles and grows up. Sam made me as the reader question whether or not she really deserved to die. Many of the terrible things Sam had done to people are not half as bad as what other people have done so did she really deserve to die? people who murder others some of them get away with it or go to jail so why didn't they deserve to die but Sam did?
The only disappointment i had with this novel was that the ending i thought should of had more to it and more answers to my questions then what it did.
Altogether this book is confusing because Sam does die but then she wakes up the next day but really it isn't the next day, she's reliving her death again. So really, is she dead or is she alive? That is the question that still to this day is running through my head when i think about this novel.

Eye Opener

Reading this book is quite confusing, how can someone go from being dead and then wake up the next day and be alive again, but is also is a huge eye opener to girls who can relate to Sam in more then one way.
Sam cheats on quizzes, dates a popular jerk, flirts with her teacher hoping to get better grades, goes to drunken parties and ridicules losers. Her clique consists of popular girls and no exceptions, they rule their highschool with a sassy entitlement.
On page 18, this quote pretty much sums up Sam.
"So now I have first pick of everything. So what. That's the way it is. Nobody ever said life was fair."
This shows to the reader how spoiled, mean and rude Sam was until the say she died and got the chance to realize she had to change. Sam used to bully kids at school and her little sister Izzy at home who never did anything but try to help. Then when she finally realizes she needs to change and wants to be a good role model for Izzy, she gets her life back on track and lives for today, like it might be her last.
Sam flashes back to being the loserest of the loser back in middle school before she became popular. Her boyfriend, Rob used to be the meanest, and most rudest guys to Sam before she became more of a woman and started to become known as a popular girl. When Sam travels back in time she realizes that she should understand and sympathize for the loners, not criticize and bully them because not very long ago she used to be just like them.
Not many highschool girls realize that they are just like Sam. They are bullies. Many girls also know what it's like to be bullied and how you feel so awful afterwards. Juliet comitted suicide and more and more teenagers are begining to do the same, just because of bullying.
Lauren Oliver did an amazing job at getting the reader's attention and making them want more. As I was reading this book i couldn't help but wonder was is real life that Sam kept reliving the same day or was is just her imagination and she was actually dead and reliving this day over and over again. Every time Sam relives that day, she finds out more about the people around her, their lives, their secrets and their true self. In return she does a tremendous amount of soul searching herself, taking a hard look at who she is and what she is leaving behind. This makes the audience becomes aware of advice on hard lessons she's learning. Even though you read almost the same day over and over again, Oliver has done a great job with including small but big minor details that change the day every time. It forces the reader to have to read a lot more in depth and makes them think about how is this different from the last day. Not only does Sam turn into a better person then what she was at the beginning of the novel but she realizes who she became was not someone she wanted to be. Even though she used to be a very harsh mean teenager in order for everything to happen to her what did they we necessary. This novel also has many comical parts in it and is a very interesting read. All of the characters in this novel, I could personally relate to almost everyone in some way, whether it was the way i have acted or been treated, they are all very real life teenagers. The events that take place with all these characters are also very real life events, like how Sam firstly dies in a car crash because of a drunk driver, it is more then likely that everyone in this world knows of someone who has been involved in a crash with a drunk driver or has been the drunk driver.

Relationship between the Rich and the Poor

There is a clearly defined line between the rich wealthy people and the poor people in this novel. To start off it is not like in the story "The Garden Party" where the rich people don't work and don't include the poor people in their activities, it is more shown in the kids because when Sam goes to Kent's house for a party all her and her friends talk about is how they never knew how rich Kent's Family really was. It seems likes that's all they noticed. They seemed very shocked because Kent doesn't act better then everyone else, or acts like he's the coolest kid there is in school or treats people with less money differently like some of Sam's friends do. Most kids today are even like that in the way that they separate the rich from the poor.
If your a student in high school, like I am you would see how many of the kid's make friends with people of the same class as them. And usually the richest kid in the group is the most popular. The trends seem to be that the richer people tend to pick on people with less money as they make fun of their clothing, or the fact that they don't wear make-up because they can't afford it. how they don't wear the 'brand' name clothing and try too hard to fit in. No matter how hard they try to fit in they will never be the same as what the popular kids are because they will always know they don't fit in and feel like they don't belong.
Kids today get teased about almost anything and in this novel, the main character Sam and her best friends pick on almost anyone with a lower rank then them. Lindsay writes rude things on walls of the cafeteria, bathroom and hallways that everyone can see just to make her ego go up and feel better about her self. Lindsay even rights things on the wall that aren't remotely true. With Sam's group of friends they always have to be better then everyone else and rise above. They attempt to impress almost anyone and do whatever they can to make sure no one is better then them. Also they all come from the same class, rich.

Monday, November 8, 2010

In my book there are the stereotypical teenage high school girls, guys, drama and groups. First there's Sam and her friends, known to the entire school population including teachers as the popular girls that everyone knows and wants to be like. They have the perfect hair, bodies, makeup, all the new and expensive clothes and what seem to be perfect lives. Throughout the book though through Juliet we learn that Lindsay who everyone believes to be perfect used to wet the bed until she was 12 and did it once at girls scouts camp and blamed it on Juliet who used to be her best friend. Juliet and Lindsay never talked after that. Lindsay never once mentions that Juliet and her used to be the best of friends because Juliet is know as a pshyco in high school. It isn't until Juliet commits suicide that Lindsay tells everyone what used to be, and death.
Death is the main topic in this novel as all events that occur end in a tragedy of a terrible death. First of all Sam dies at the start in a car crash after getting into a vehicle with a drunk driver. Then Sam relives that day over and over again and in the end Juliet's the one who dies. Sam relives that night 14 times to try and solve as to why she had to die.

Archetypes

In "Before I Fall" there are many characters that play many different roles and portray various archetypes throughout the novel.
A hero is the protagonist and continues a journey from childhood to being an adult. Sam could be classified as the hero in this novel. During her childhood she was bullied and not so popular but growing up and changing she becomes on of the most popular teenagers in her school. Then she realizes how badly she had been treating everyone and changes and goes on a journey to change herself and the way she treats people and then she sets off to help save Juliet's life and tries to convince her to not commit suicide.
Death- Juliet dies. Although Sam was never close friends with Juliet and was always mean to her she feel uber bad because she could have been an impact into why Juliet killed herself. It also makes Elody, Lindsay and Ally change their way of acting towards other people.
The Wise Old man- would be Sam's mom throughout the novel she is always giving good and wise advice to Sam and her friends. When Juliet commits suicide she is the first one to comfort Sam and make her feel a lot better about what has happened. She is also always there for Samantha in good times and bad.

Dreams

One of the themes I have discovered about this books is dreams. In Before I Fall, Sam dies over and over again. Starts off every cupid day waking up then after school she goes to Ally's to get ready with Lindsay and Elody then ends up going to Kent's party. The first night she attends it with her friends and towards the end of the night they make fun of Juliet, they refer to her as the psycho and then they drive off in Lindsay's car and die in a terrible car accident. Then the next morning she wakes up and it's cupid day again.
The next night she goes to Kent's party and again Juliet calls them names, but instead of Sam throwing her drink in her face all she says is "You don't know me." But just like the night before they die in a car accident. But once again she wakes up and it's cupid day again. Sam goes to math class and flirts with Mr. Daimler, then after class they fool around. Sam asks Lindsay why she hates Juliet so much and Elody and Ally make fun of Sam for caring about Juliet, the psycho. They leave the party early and all go back to Ally's. Around two in the morning the phone rings and Juliet has committed suicide, blowing her head of in her room. Sam goes up to the bathroom and instead she finds herself looking through yearbooks and finds pictures of Lindsay and Juliet together, they were best friends in public school, but she doesn't question Lindsay about it. Another cupid day goes by and the same party Sam went to the past 4 nights occurs again but this time Sam tries to find Juliet to stop her from what she thinks she's about to do. Sam finds Juliet out at the road this time and she jumps out into the oncoming traffic and a car kills her.
Sam has the same day everyday and she relives it and changes what she thinks causes her death so that she won't die. She also tries to help Juliet and realizes how bad of a person she has been to peers in high school, like Juliet and Kent. She realizes she has been a huge bully.

A Breif Introduction to Before I Fall

Sam gets picked up by her best friends everyday at 6:55am. Ally and Elody arrive in Lindsay's Ranger Rover with sesame seed bagels that they previously purchase before arriving to Sam's house from Dunkin Donuts. Before taking off with her friends, Sam is awaken every morning by her little sister Izzy. Sam can not stand her. Sam pleads that she is annoying and hates when she comes into her room full of energy and loud. It's cupid day, February 12th, and cupid day celebrates Valentine's day. You can buy a roses for your friends for one dollar and attached to a rose will be a note that you can write whatever you want on it. The person who gets the most roses is said to be the most popular and hottest person in the school. So as you can most likely guess it is many people's goals to get the most roses. They all know Lindsay will will, she's the prettiest and most out going of anyone they know. Lindsay, Sam, Elody and Ally all wear identical outfits to school on special occasions and for cupid day they wear black mini skirts and red fur trimmed tank tops. Sam gets a lot of roses but the only one she cares about is the one from her boyfriend, Rob. Although when she gets the rose from him is says "Happy cupid day, luv ya. happy now?" This makes Sam very disappointed when he says 'luv ya' she was expecting 'Love you' as she thinks they are totally different things.
Mr. Daimler is Sam's math teacher, who she has had the hots for for many years. He is six feet tall and always tan and dresses modernly. He is considered the hottest guy at Jefferson High, he always sends Sam a rose. Sam also gets a rose from Kent her public school crush with a cartoon written on the note. Sam is too cool to talk to Kent for every time he attempts to talk to her she completely ignores him and walks away.
Sam and Lindsay skip English class and head to TYCB a Chinese restaurant. They spot Alex and Anna, Alex is cheating on his girlfriend with Anna and Sam and Lindsay just witnessed it! Lindsay talks to them about the party tonight at Kent's and then brings up Alex's girlfriend Bridget asking if he is going to be bringing her. Em brassing them until their heads are ready to pop off Sam and Lindsay leave.
Before the party they all go to Ally's to drink and do make-up and hair together. This is the night Sam plans to lose her virginity. Then they head to Kent's and Rob is wasted, Sam is supper disappointed and didn't want either of them to be like that for their first time. After being at the party for a while everyone goes silent as Juliet Sykes walks into the room she starts yelling profane words out at Lindsay, Elody, Ally and Sam. Then they yell back at her psycho and dumping beer out onto her. Kent sees Sam after and can not believe what she was done they argue and once again Sam completely ignores him and walks away to find Rob, where he is passed out on a couch with drool coming out of his mouth. At 12:39 they are driving down the road skidding on the slippery wet pavement and all of a sudden Lindsay yells and her cigarette lights on fire and they all die.

Characters in Before I Fall

Samantha Kingston is the main character in this novel and many portray her as an ignorant rude, popular girl in Thomas Jefferson High school. My outlook on Sam is that she is a very honest and 'real' girl compared to her friends. Her friends and her are the girls that everyone is scared of, they're intimidating and beautiful. If you have ever seen the movie Mean Girls it reminds me of them. They all dress the same on special occasions and do their makeup and hair perfect everyday and no one is cooler than them according to them. Sam comes across as a spoiled girl who gets what she wants and when she wants. Although she becomes a different person after she dies and then lives again, it is like she was pretending to be someone who she wasn't. Before she dies, she is rude and snobby and fake, she bullies other girls and has a total different personality. When she dies and then time reverses and she lives again she sticks up for others who her friends, Lindsay, Ally and Elody make fun of and speaks how she feels and not what is expected of her.
Lindsay is the most popular and hottest girl of the school. She gets the boys she wants, and does exactly what she wants. She is also a crazy out of control driver and controls the 'group' and tells everyone what to do. She is very stereotypical of the popular rich girl with long blond hair and as thin as a twig.
Ally is sweet and very very feminine. She also can be quite. She is the most innocent out of all girls.
Elody is the loud and obnoxious one. She drinks a lot and is always the one to be drunk at parties and has sex with multiple people. Elody is the nicest though out of all of them, while the others make fun of random people day in and day out Elody does not help with one mean word she either walks away or completely ignores them.
Kent who used to be Sam's best friend in public school is the complete opposite of Sam's now boy friend Rob. Kent is described as awkward and a nerd, he concentrates on school work and is very weird to Sam now, although I think Sam is always making fun of him and ignoring him because she has a secret crush on him. Rob on the other hand, is the hottest and most popular guy in school. Over half of the female population of the school has a crush on him. He is the typical popular guy, plays football, has a popular girl as his girlfriend, loves to party, a huge jock and a bit of a jerk. I do not understand why Sam is with him because every time she wants to talk he always has something more important to do like keeping his social ego high.
Juliet is the loser according to Sam and her friends, she wears her hair in front of her face, many believe she is phsyco and has no friends. Surprisingly her and Lindsay used to be best friends. Half way through the book she commits suicide.
Izzy is Sam's youngest and only sister. She is full of life, she loves her barbies and dolls, a typical little girl. She is a sweetheart and yet Sam pays no attention to her. She is proud to be her and would not change it for anyone!

My First Book

When I first went through the list of books to chose from for our independent study project, I went my the cover name to see if any would ring a bell and look for ones I thought I would enjoy reading, for I knew that if I chose books I did not like I would have a very difficult time reading them and trying to do a report on them. The two books I chose were Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Before officially claiming these books for my independent study project I did some research before. After researching these books I decided that they both seemed like the right books for me! I know you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover or title but the titles of these book definitely caught my eye!
